The agency’s Director-General, Dr Jide Idris, said the support was not included in the NCDC’s original budget but became necessary after people placed in quarantine raised concerns about their families, businesses and loss of income.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Idris explained that the affected individuals had been removed from their normal routines for public-health reasons. He said the agency was responsible for ensuring their feeding and accommodation while they remained in the designated facility.
Idris added that some contacts had considered leaving quarantine because of the disruption to their lives. He warned that allowing people whose infection status had not been conclusively established to leave could create a public-health risk.
The NCDC chief said the payments were intended to ease the burden on those affected and encourage compliance with quarantine measures. He also noted that state governments ordinarily bear responsibility for providing quarantine facilities and related support.
The intervention follows Nigeria’s confirmation of an imported case of Ebola caused by the Bundibugyo virus in the Federal Capital Territory. Health authorities said 53 primary contacts had been identified for monitoring at the time of the announcement.
