Pate said the 42-year-old woman departed Abuja on Monday, October 26, with his approval. She was accompanied by her husband, who remained asymptomatic at the time of the evacuation.
According to the minister, the patient’s clinical condition had improved considerably before departure. She was stable, conscious and communicating, while her laboratory results were approaching baseline levels.
However, Pate cautioned that the improvement did not necessarily mean the patient was no longer infectious. He said strict public health protocols were maintained during the medical transfer and commended the clinical and public health teams involved.
The evacuation followed Nigeria’s confirmation of its first imported case of Bundibugyo Ebola virus disease on October 20. The woman had returned from Uganda through Addis Ababa before developing symptoms and receiving treatment in Abuja.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention said 53 primary contacts had been identified and were being monitored as part of the response. A separate suspected case reported in Rivers State tested negative, according to the agency’s situation report.
Health authorities continue to conduct surveillance and contact tracing to limit the risk of further transmission.
