Kwara State has recorded significant improvements in childhood vaccination and nutrition, with more children receiving essential immunisations and fewer suffering from malnutrition. Findings from the 2025–2026 Nigeria Mini-Demographic and Health Survey showed that coverage of the third dose of the pentavalent vaccine among children aged 12 to 23 months increased from 34.9 per cent in 2024 to 50.4 per cent, while the proportion of children who had received no vaccines dropped from 48.1 per cent to 27.3 per cent.

The Executive Secretary of the Kwara State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Professor Nusirat Elelu, disclosed the findings in a statement released on Wednesday, October 28, 2026. She described the figures as encouraging evidence of progress in protecting children against preventable diseases. The pentavalent vaccine, administered at six, 10 and 14 weeks of age, protects children against five serious illnesses, including diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough.

The survey also revealed improvements in child nutrition across the state. Stunting among children under five declined from 40.8 per cent to 35.5 per cent, while wasting fell from 6.1 per cent to 3.5 per cent. The proportion of underweight children also decreased from 24.5 per cent to 14.8 per cent, indicating progress in efforts to address childhood malnutrition and promote healthy physical development.

Elelu attributed the improvements to investments in primary healthcare services under Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq's administration, including nutrition interventions, community outreach and the biannual Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Week. She explained that the government would continue strengthening routine immunisation, nutrition screening, growth monitoring and community mobilisation to ensure that vulnerable children receive essential healthcare services.

Despite the improvements, the latest findings show that more than one-third of children under five in Kwara remain affected by stunting, while over one-quarter of children aged 12 to 23 months have received no vaccinations. The agency therefore urged parents and caregivers to visit nearby primary healthcare centres for free routine immunisation, maintain updated vaccination records and regularly monitor their children's growth to prevent avoidable illnesses and nutritional deficiencies.
