The Nigerian Senate has called for an immediate security offensive across vulnerable border communities in Taraba, Plateau and Bauchi states following reports that about 80 people were killed in a violent attack on Binnari community in Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State. The lawmakers demanded stronger military operations, increased surveillance and the establishment of additional security camps to prevent further attacks on residents.

The resolution followed a motion of urgent national importance presented by Senator Isa Shuaibu Lau during plenary on Wednesday, October 28, 2026. The lawmaker condemned the persistent attacks on rural communities, warning that the growing violence had resulted in deaths, destruction of property, displacement of residents and widespread fear. He stressed that security agencies must take decisive steps to protect vulnerable communities and prevent further bloodshed.

The attack reportedly occurred on Friday, October 23, shortly after Muslim Friday prayers, when armed men invaded Binnari at approximately 3 p.m., shooting indiscriminately and looting food items from shops and residential buildings. The attackers allegedly set shops and motorcycles ablaze before fleeing. Reports suggested that the gunmen may have crossed into Taraba from neighbouring Plateau State, raising concerns about security gaps along state boundaries.

Although the Senate cited approximately 80 deaths, other community accounts placed the death toll at about 50, indicating that the exact number of casualties remains uncertain. The lawmakers called for improved intelligence gathering, coordinated security operations and rapid intervention to stop further violence. They also urged security agencies to establish additional operational bases in affected communities and strengthen surveillance across vulnerable border areas.

Beyond the proposed military response, the Senate directed attention to the humanitarian needs of survivors and displaced residents, urging the National Emergency Management Agency and the North-East Development Commission to provide emergency relief materials. Lawmakers observed a minute of silence in honour of the victims and expressed sympathy with affected families, while calling for sustained measures to restore peace and security to the troubled communities.
