The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Sokoto/Zamfara Area Command, has intercepted unregistered pharmaceutical products valued at over ₦5.8 million and handed them over to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). The seizure followed an intelligence-led operation along the Illela-Sokoto Road aimed at preventing unauthorised medicines from entering Nigerian markets.

The Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller Haliru Abdullahi, disclosed the development during a handover ceremony at the command headquarters in Sokoto on Wednesday, October 28, 2026. He explained that patrol officers intercepted the pharmaceutical products following credible intelligence about their movement, describing the operation as part of the command's efforts to protect public health and strengthen border security.

The seized products included 360 packages of anti-cold medication, 500 packages of amodiaquine, 140 packages of paracetamol and 100 packages of quinine. Customs placed the total duty-paid value of the items at ₦5,804,062.06. Abdullahi explained that the importation of unregistered pharmaceutical products contravenes Section 55 of the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023, and applicable NAFDAC regulations.

The Customs chief warned smugglers and individuals dealing in unauthorised medicines to desist from the practice, stressing that the command would continue intelligence-driven operations against illegal pharmaceutical imports. He commended officers involved in the seizure and reaffirmed the importance of collaboration with relevant regulatory agencies to prevent potentially harmful products from reaching consumers.

Receiving the seized medicines, the NAFDAC State Coordinator in Sokoto, AbduSalam Lawal, commended Customs for its cooperation in tackling unregistered pharmaceutical products. He assured the command that the agency would carry out the necessary regulatory procedures and strengthen joint enforcement efforts to protect Nigerians from potentially unsafe medicines.
