Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has signed five bills into law, including legislation guaranteeing the payment of a 13th-month salary to eligible public servants in the state. The governor assented to the bills on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at the Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Asaba, describing the move as part of efforts to improve workers' welfare, strengthen public institutions and promote economic development.

The newly signed 13th Month Salary Law, 2026, gives legal backing to the annual payment of an additional salary to qualifying state government workers. Oborevwori explained that the measure was designed to reward civil servants for their contributions, improve morale and encourage greater productivity. The legislation follows an earlier government decision to make the additional payment a permanent entitlement rather than a benefit dependent solely on the discretion of successive administrations.

Two other laws signed by the governor amend the state's judicial framework by increasing the number of High Court judges from 46 to 50 and Customary Court of Appeal judges from nine to 12. The amendments are intended to strengthen judicial capacity, improve access to justice and reduce delays in the handling of cases across the state.

The governor also signed the Public and Private Properties Protection Amendment Law to strengthen safeguards against unlawful occupation and destruction of property. Another legislation, the Delta State Revenue Service (Consolidated) Law, 2026, seeks to harmonise tax administration, reduce multiple taxation and create a more favourable environment for businesses and investors operating in the state.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, Oborevwori urged government agencies to ensure effective implementation of the new laws. The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Emomotimi Guwor, said the legislation would strengthen governance and public service delivery, while the outgoing Head of Service, Dr Mininim Oseji, welcomed the 13th-month salary provision as a measure that could improve workers' welfare and support household spending.
