The Federal Government has disbursed ₦5.15 trillion in special intervention funds to the Nigerian military and related security agencies between November 2023 and September 2026, according to financial records presented to the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).

An analysis of the records showed that ₦5.65 trillion was paid into a dedicated intervention account during the period, with ₦5.15 trillion, representing 91.15 per cent, already disbursed.

The funds came from the Federation Account and other government revenue sources, including non-oil revenue and transfers from the FAAC Withheld Account. The intervention programme operated separately from regular annual budgetary allocations to the Ministry of Defence and other security institutions.

Disbursements increased significantly in 2026. The account recorded ₦2.75 trillion in payments during the year up to the period covered by the latest ledger, representing 53.4 per cent of total disbursements since the programme began.

The records also showed an outstanding balance of ₦500 billion as of October 14, 2026, following a transfer that had no corresponding payment recorded.

However, the ledger did not provide a detailed breakdown of the operations, equipment purchases, personnel costs or projects financed by the intervention funds.

The substantial spending comes amid continuing security challenges, including insurgency, banditry and mass kidnappings in different parts of the country.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has begun reviewing the 2019 National Security Strategy to develop a framework addressing emerging threats, including cybercrime, food insecurity and climate-related challenges.
