Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has assured pensioners in the state of his administration's commitment to providing them with a permanent secretariat and an official bus to support their activities.

The governor also promised to address the financial burden of rent payments currently affecting the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP).

AbdulRazaq made the pledges during a meeting with the union's leadership in Ilorin on Tuesday, October 27, 2026. He explained that the pensioners' existing office accommodation was secured through a Certificate of Temporary Occupancy, which did not guarantee permanent ownership of the property. The governor assured the retirees that he would work with the Head of Service to identify a suitable permanent location and resolve their accommodation concerns.

The state's Commissioner for Finance, Dr Hauwa Nuru, maintained that the government was up to date with pension payments and continued to make financial provisions for gratuities. She explained that some retirees who had not received pensions relating to the 2015–2018 period failed to participate in the required verification exercise, which affected the processing of their entitlements.

Speaking on behalf of the pensioners, the union's state chairman, Mahmud Saidu, commended the administration for improvements in pension payments since May 2019. He recalled that retirees previously experienced delayed payments, outstanding arrears and partial pension disbursements ranging from 25 to 50 per cent. According to Saidu, the government subsequently cleared more than ₦4 billion in outstanding salary deductions and improved the regularity of pension payments.

Saidu further stated that pensioners now receive their monthly entitlements on or before the 25th of each month, unlike previous periods when payments were delayed. The governor's latest commitments are expected to address some of the union's longstanding administrative challenges, although no specific timeline has been announced for the provision of the permanent secretariat or official bus.
