Turkish football giants Fenerbahce have appointed former Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt as interim head coach following the resignation of Ismail Kartal after a disappointing defeat to bitter rivals Galatasaray. The 46-year-old Dutchman will oversee the first team until the club appoints a permanent replacement, marking another major step in his coaching career.

Kartal stepped down on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, following Fenerbahce's 2-1 loss to Galatasaray in Monday's Turkish Super Lig encounter. The defeat left Fenerbahce fifth in the standings, six points behind the league leaders, increasing pressure on the club's management to reverse its disappointing domestic form.

Kuyt, who had served as Kartal's assistant since June 2026, now faces the immediate challenge of stabilising the team and improving results. His first assignment will be Saturday's league fixture against Goztepe, before a highly anticipated UEFA Champions League meeting with Liverpool on Wednesday, November 4, at 5:45 p.m. GMT.

The European encounter will carry special significance for Kuyt, who enjoyed a successful six-year spell at Liverpool, scoring 71 goals in 285 appearances and helping the English club lift the League Cup in 2012. He subsequently joined Fenerbahce, where he spent three seasons and won the Turkish league title during the 2013–2014 campaign, before returning to Feyenoord and retiring in 2017.

Since entering management, Kuyt has gained coaching experience with ADO Den Haag, Belgian club Beerschot and FC Dordrecht. His temporary appointment presents an opportunity to demonstrate his managerial abilities at a familiar club, with Fenerbahce supporters hoping his experience and understanding of the team's traditions can help restore confidence ahead of crucial domestic and European fixtures.
