New England took the lead in the 53rd minute through Dániel Gazdag, who finished off a move involving defenders Ilay Feingold and Peyton Miller. Inter Miami responded in the 69th minute when Messi set up Germán Berterame with a headed pass, allowing the Mexican forward to equalise.
Messi then produced the decisive moment in the 83rd minute, dribbling past several defenders before combining with Telasco Segovia and finishing with a low shot into the bottom corner. The strike was his 26th league goal of the season and his 937th in official career matches for club and country.
The victory moved Inter Miami to second place in the Eastern Conference with 59 points, one ahead of New England, which remained on 58 points. The result also secured Miami a place in the 2027 CONCACAF Champions Cup.
Inter Miami will return to action against Charlotte FC on November 7 in their final regular-season fixture, with Messi looking to maintain his scoring form ahead of the MLS playoffs.
