The General Officer Commanding 1 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Abubakar Wase, has urged soldiers to justify the Federal Government's recent salary increase through greater dedication, discipline and improved performance in the fight against insecurity. The commander said the enhanced remuneration should encourage military personnel to intensify efforts to protect lives, maintain peace and safeguard Nigeria's territorial integrity.

Wase delivered the charge on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, while addressing troops of the 171 Battalion in Daura, Katsina State. The senior officer, who also serves as Commander of Sector 1, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, explained that the salary adjustment demonstrated the government's recognition of the sacrifices made by members of the Armed Forces. He stressed that improved welfare benefits should be accompanied by greater accountability and commitment to assigned responsibilities.

The Federal Government had earlier approved salary increases ranging from 30 to 80 per cent for approximately 250,000 military personnel, effective September 1, 2026. Under the arrangement, junior personnel from private to staff sergeant received the highest percentage increase, while other ranks benefited from adjustments based on their positions. Wase urged soldiers to translate the financial improvement into stronger operational performance and heightened vigilance against security threats.

The commander also reminded troops of the importance of professionalism, obedience to lawful instructions and the protection of civilians during military operations. He assured personnel that the Army leadership remained committed to addressing their administrative and logistical challenges, including the provision of necessary operational support and equipment. According to him, strengthening soldiers' welfare and ensuring adequate resources are essential to improving military effectiveness.

During the visit, Wase also addressed members of the Nigerian Army Soldiers' Wives Association, commending their sacrifices and continued support for personnel deployed on military assignments. He acknowledged the importance of family stability to soldiers' morale and psychological well-being, while reaffirming the Army's commitment to supporting both personnel and their families. The engagement formed part of ongoing efforts to strengthen operational readiness, discipline and welfare across the division.
