Tragedy struck in Lagos State on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, when a container-laden truck overturned onto a passenger bus on Berger Bridge, inward Eleko, along the Ibeju-Lekki Expressway, killing four people and leaving six others injured. The fatal accident occurred in the early hours of the morning and involved an articulated truck carrying a 20-foot container and an interstate Toyota Hiace bus with registration number GME-589 ZU.

The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the incident, explaining that preliminary investigations linked the crash to excessive speeding. According to him, the truck was travelling uphill on the bridge when it collided with the passenger bus. The driver reportedly lost control while attempting to avoid the collision, causing the heavy vehicle to overturn onto the bus.

The impact claimed the lives of four adult male passengers, who were confirmed dead at the scene, while six other men sustained varying degrees of injuries. Emergency responders from LASEMA, working alongside officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Nigeria Police Force, provided first aid and evacuated the injured victims to Epe General Hospital for treatment. A private crane was also deployed to lift the overturned truck and container to facilitate the recovery of the deceased victims.

The accident caused disruption along the busy transport corridor as emergency personnel carried out rescue and recovery operations. Traffic management measures were introduced to protect motorists and prevent further incidents. The Lagos State Government expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured passengers a speedy recovery, while authorities continued efforts to clear the affected section of the road.

Meanwhile, LASEMA also responded to two other road accidents in Lagos on Wednesday, including a truck crash near Vetland School along Old Abeokuta Road in Agege and a collision involving a truck and a Toyota Corolla along LASU-Igando Road. No deaths were recorded in those incidents, although one motorist sustained a minor injury. The agency urged drivers to obey speed limits, avoid reckless driving and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before travelling.
