The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has uncovered a residential building in Lagos where more than 100 sacks of empty alcoholic beverage bottles were allegedly being stored for use in producing counterfeit drinks. The discovery was made at 322B Meiran Road in the Agbado Oke-Odo area following intelligence received by the agency.

NAFDAC said operatives from its Investigation and Enforcement Directorate found bottles of different sizes and brands stacked inside the property, many of them covered with tarpaulins. The agency said the bottles included those carrying labels associated with products such as Action Bitter and Royal Circle Premium Whisky.

Assistant Director in the directorate, Kunle Ojo, said the bottles were suspected to have been stockpiled for supply to people involved in counterfeiting alcoholic beverages. He said the agency destroyed the bottles to prevent them from being reused in the production and circulation of fake drinks.

Ojo also expressed concern that a residential property was allegedly being used for such activity, warning that counterfeit alcoholic products pose serious risks to public health. He urged residents to report suspicious storage, production or distribution of regulated products to the nearest NAFDAC office.

The discovery comes days after NAFDAC raided another suspected counterfeit alcohol operation at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex, where two suspects were arrested and products valued at more than ₦2 billion were seized.
