The aircraft crashed into the river on October 5, killing all 25 people reportedly on board. Nine days later, the main wreckage and victims’ remains had yet to be fully recovered, according to reports.
The monarch of Igbokoda, Oba Afolabi Odidiomo, said residents had been enduring an increasingly offensive odour and expressed concern about possible contamination from aviation fuel. He urged the Federal and Ondo State governments to accelerate recovery efforts and begin an urgent environmental clean-up.
Ondo State Commissioner for Environment, Tob Loko, said the government was assessing the environmental impact and potential public health implications to determine appropriate decontamination measures.
The Nigerian Air Force said it had intensified search operations and established a 12-member board to investigate the crash. The investigation is expected to examine technical, operational, environmental and human factors, as well as the emergency response.
Meanwhile, the Senate has called for an audit of the Air Force’s aircraft fleet and maintenance funding, while the House of Representatives has demanded an independent investigation.
Authorities have cautioned against drawing conclusions about the cause of the crash before the investigation is completed.
