The Lagos State Government has announced a temporary traffic diversion on Independence Bridge in Lagos Island as the Federal Ministry of Works begins urgent asphalt repairs on the bridge. The repair work is scheduled to start on Friday night, October 16, and continue through Saturday and Sunday, October 18, 2026.
The exercise will affect both inbound and outbound lanes, but the bridge will not be completely shut at once. Government officials said repairs will be carried out section by section, with one lane kept open at each stage to allow motorists to continue their journeys.
Motorists have been advised to plan ahead, allow extra travel time and consider alternative routes while the work is ongoing. The state said traffic management measures have been designed to reduce delays around Lagos Island and adjoining areas during the repair period.
Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority will be deployed around the affected sections to control traffic and guide motorists. Road users have also been urged to obey traffic instructions and cooperate with officials until the repairs are completed.
