A major disaster was prevented in Lagos after a tanker carrying 33,000 litres of ethanol overturned at Second Rainbow Bridge in the Amuwo-Odofin area, prompting an emergency response from state and federal agencies.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said no deaths or injuries were recorded in the incident, which occurred when the truck fell while its driver was negotiating a turn on the bridge.
According to LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, preliminary investigations indicated that speeding caused the truck’s turntable to detach and fall onto the roundabout, obstructing the road.
Given ethanol’s flammability and the risk of fire or explosion, emergency responders cordoned off the area and introduced crowd and traffic control measures. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Federal Fire Service applied chemical foam to the tanker and surrounding area to suppress fumes and reduce the risk of a secondary incident.
The Nigeria Police Force and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority also helped secure the scene and manage traffic.
In a separate incident, a cement truck became stuck on a road divider at Oke Koto, Agege. LASEMA said its recovery team removed the vehicle and traffic movement was restored, with no casualties reported.
Oke-Osanyintolu urged motorists, particularly drivers transporting hazardous materials, to obey speed limits and traffic regulations. Residents were advised to report emergencies through LASEMA’s toll-free numbers, 767 and 112.
