Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has ordered the fumigation of the Igbokoda River and the distribution of nose masks and other health kits to residents following complaints about a strong odour from the site of a Nigerian Air Force aircraft crash.

The directive was announced on Wednesday in a statement signed by the state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku. The governor directed the Ministries of Environment and Health to begin extensive fumigation as authorities assess possible environmental and public health risks.

Aiyedatiwa also instructed the Ilaje Local Government Area to arrange water tankers to provide potable water if assessments determine that the river is severely polluted and unsuitable for use. The temporary supply is expected to remain in place pending a lasting solution.

The river is an important source of livelihood for residents of Igbokoda and neighbouring communities, making concerns over possible contamination particularly serious.

The crash occurred on October 5, when a Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft went down in a swampy area of Igbokoda. All 25 people reportedly on board—five crew members and 20 passengers—were killed.

Recovery operations have been complicated by the swampy terrain and the aircraft’s submersion. The Nigerian Air Force has intensified the search and established a 12-member board of inquiry to investigate the incident.

The state government says it will continue supporting recovery efforts while working to protect residents. Possible contamination and disease risks remain matters for assessment; the fumigation order does not itself confirm an outbreak.
