Police spokesperson DSP Musa Mohammed said the Divisional Police Officer of the ‘A’ Division acted after receiving a complaint. According to the police, Commissioner of Police Ajao Saka Adewale directed that the suspect and case be transferred to the state police headquarters for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The suspect was identified as Ambros Mark, a pastor at Point of Redemption Church International in the Amarata area of Yenagoa. The girls were reportedly members of the church choir. Their identities are being withheld to protect their privacy.
The complaint was reportedly made after one of the girls told her father about the alleged incident. The father, said to be a police officer, subsequently reported the matter to the authorities.
The Bayelsa chapter of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) called for a thorough investigation, diligent prosecution where warranted, and appropriate legal and psychosocial support for the children. The organisation also stressed that religious position should not shield anyone from accountability.
The allegations against the suspect have not been determined by a court. Police investigations are ongoing, and the children’s identities and dignity should be protected throughout the process.
