The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has raised concerns over 52,225 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) reportedly awaiting collection across Bayelsa State ahead of Nigeria's 2027 general elections. The commission warned that failure by eligible voters to collect their cards could affect electoral participation, calling for intensified public awareness and mobilisation across the state's eight local government areas.

The Bayelsa State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Isah Ehimeakhe, disclosed the figures during a stakeholders' meeting held in Yenagoa on Tuesday, October 27, 2026. According to the breakdown presented, Ekeremor Local Government Area recorded the highest figure with 12,023 PVCs, followed by Sagbama with 10,080 and Southern Ijaw with 7,115. Other figures included Yenagoa with 6,332, Brass with 6,211, Kolokuma/Opokuma with 3,712, Nembe with 3,620 and Ogbia with 3,132.

Ehimeakhe appealed to political parties, traditional rulers, religious leaders and civil society organisations to encourage eligible residents to collect their voter cards. He acknowledged that transportation costs and difficult terrain remained major obstacles for residents of riverine communities, where travelling to designated collection centres could be expensive and time-consuming. A representative of the Peoples Democratic Party also urged INEC to introduce practical arrangements to make PVC collection more accessible to residents of remote areas.

The commission also warned politicians and their supporters against hate speech, misinformation, personal attacks and activities capable of triggering violence during the election period. Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Ajao Saka Adewale, urged political actors to prioritise public safety and comply with electoral laws. Stakeholders further called for improved training of election personnel, adequate protection of electoral materials and stronger cooperation between security agencies and election officials.

Meanwhile, INEC announced that its recruitment portal for prospective ad hoc election personnel would close at midnight on November 18, 2026. The commission also stated that campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections, which began on August 19, 2026, would end at midnight on January 14, 2027. Residents were encouraged to collect their PVCs, reject electoral violence and participate peacefully in the forthcoming elections.
