The Federal Government has approved a monthly transport allowance of ₦70,000 for public servants for six months, beginning in November 2026, as part of measures to ease the pressure of rising living costs.

The approval followed a conciliation meeting between government representatives and the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja on October 27. The resolutions were documented in a memorandum of understanding signed by representatives of both parties.

Under the agreement, the six-month intervention could amount to ₦420,000 per eligible beneficiary over the payment period. However, the memorandum did not specify the exact monthly payment dates or the administrative arrangements for disbursement.

The government also approved outstanding peculiar allowance arrears, effective from May 1, 2026, to be paid in three equal monthly instalments beginning in November.

For health workers, the agreement provides for the settlement of 19 months of outstanding allowance arrears within three months, starting in December 2026.

Despite the agreements, the Federal Government and organised labour did not resolve their disagreement over the effective date for implementing the national minimum wage arrangements currently under discussion. Both sides agreed to establish a Minimum Wage Negotiation Committee and begin meetings immediately.

The memorandum also urged state and local governments to participate in the transport support intervention. Their implementation arrangements remain subject to clarification.

The government and the NLC are expected to review progress on the resolutions after one month.
