The Federal Government has reaffirmed plans to expand Nigeria’s digital infrastructure through the deployment of 90,000 kilometres of open-access fibre across the country. Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Bosun Tijani said the project forms part of a broader programme to improve affordable and reliable connectivity.

Project BRIDGE is expected to expand Nigeria’s fibre backbone from about 35,000 kilometres to roughly 125,000 kilometres, reaching all 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory and 774 local government areas. The government also plans thousands of additional telecommunications towers for underserved communities.

Tijani said the digital infrastructure programme would be complemented by two communications satellites, a national alphanumeric postcode system and other projects aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s digital economy.
