A power failure at a Google Cloud data centre in London disrupted banking and other online services across the United Kingdom on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. Google said multiple services in its europe-west2 cloud region experienced elevated errors and intermittent network failures following what it described as a “power event.”

Digital bank Revolut was among the institutions affected, with customers reporting problems involving ATM withdrawals, bank transfers and card top-ups. Lloyds and HSBC also confirmed difficulties with their mobile and online banking services, while Revolut assured customers that their money and personal data remained safe.

The disruption extended beyond banking, with users reporting problems accessing services operated by property platform Rightmove and Royal Mail. Google Cloud’s status dashboard showed that dozens of cloud products were affected in the London region as engineers worked to restore normal operations.

Google later confirmed that full service had been restored in its London-based cloud region after several hours of disruption. The company said its engineering teams investigated the incident and brought affected services back online following the power-related failure.

The outage again highlights the growing dependence of banks, businesses and public services on a small number of major cloud providers. Regulators in Europe have increasingly focused on the operational risks created when critical financial services rely heavily on external technology infrastructure.
