Stakeholders in Nigeria’s telecommunications and technology sectors have proposed the creation of a National Telecom Sustainability Index to provide a common framework for measuring environmental, social and governance performance across the industry. The proposal was presented at a Telecoms and Technology Sustainability Working Group strategy meeting in Abuja.

The draft framework is built around five areas: environment and energy, digital inclusion and affordability, digital integrity and consumer trust, infrastructure resilience and governance, and supply chain and local value creation. Proposed indicators include emissions, diesel dependence, e-waste management, broadband access, service quality, data protection, fibre cuts, vandalism and local job creation.

The Nigerian Communications Commission has not yet adopted the proposal. The framework is still undergoing stakeholder review and is expected to be formally submitted to the regulator before any implementation structure or reporting requirements are approved.
