The Federal Government says stronger cooperation with China could help Nigeria improve electricity supply, expand renewable energy and develop local manufacturing of power equipment. Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe made the remarks in Abuja during a reception marking the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

Tegbe said future Chinese investment should also develop Nigerian engineers and technicians, strengthen local companies and improve the country’s ability to operate and maintain new infrastructure. Nigeria has recently held talks with Chinese engineering firms and financial institutions on accelerating power projects and attracting investment across the electricity value chain.

The minister also said Nigeria-China trade reached about $17 billion in the first half of 2026, while Chinese Ambassador Yu Dunhai put the figure at $18 billion. Both sides said they want broader cooperation in energy, industrialisation, technology and other sectors.
