INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, gave the assurance at the AI and Democracy Forum 2026 in Abuja, where he discussed how the commission intends to use emerging technology to support election administration without replacing human decision-making.
Amupitan said AI could assist with logistics planning, route optimisation, cybersecurity and the verification of election results. However, he maintained that algorithms would not decide who wins an election.
He also disclosed that AI components are already used in some electoral technologies, including the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, which incorporates facial recognition and fingerprint processes.
The commission is developing an AI governance policy to guide the technology’s use in the electoral process. Amupitan said mandatory human oversight would remain important, particularly in critical decisions involving voter accreditation, result collation and candidate qualification.
He also warned that deepfake videos, fabricated audio and other AI-generated content could mislead voters and undermine confidence in genuine election information.
As preparations continue for the 2027 polls, the INEC chairman urged political parties, media organisations, civil society groups and security agencies to help identify and counter digital manipulation.
The commission says technology should support electoral integrity, while the final choice of leaders remains with Nigerians.
