The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has destroyed expired medicines and medical consumables valued at about N59 million in Rivers State to prevent the products from entering circulation.

The drugs, which originated from the United States, were intercepted at the Port Harcourt port during a joint examination involving NAFDAC and the Nigeria Customs Service. They included painkillers, hypertension medicines, antidepressants, anti-ulcer drugs and other pharmaceutical products.

NAFDAC said the destruction at the Igwuruta dumpsite in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area was necessary because expired medicines could pose health risks if diverted or returned to the supply chain.
