Nigerian gospel singer and pastor Nathaniel Bassey has made history after his official YouTube channel surpassed one billion views, making him the first African gospel artist reported to achieve the milestone.

Figures displayed on his official channel, Nathaniel Bassey Main, showed that it had accumulated more than 1.014 billion views and 5.24 million subscribers as of November 1, 2026. The channel was created in 2011 and has grown through his music releases, worship sessions and online prayer gatherings.

The achievement coincides with the October 2026 edition of the Hallelujah Challenge, the online prayer and worship initiative founded by Bassey in 2017. The programme, which features midnight sessions of praise, worship and prayers, has attracted participants from different parts of the world, with thousands joining live broadcasts and millions accessing recorded sessions.

Bassey is known for gospel songs including Imela, Onise Iyanu, Olowogbogboro and You Are God. His music and online ministry have helped expand his audience beyond Nigeria, connecting worshippers across different countries.

The milestone has also renewed conversations about monetising the large audience attracted by the Hallelujah Challenge. However, Bassey has maintained that the programme is primarily a platform for worship and spiritual devotion rather than a commercial venture.
