Nigeria has warned world leaders that national borders and powerful defence systems cannot fully protect countries from terrorism, cyberattacks, organised crime and other threats that operate across international boundaries. President Bola Tinubu made the remarks during Nigeria’s address at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Drawing on Nigeria’s experience fighting Boko Haram, ISWAP and other armed groups, Tinubu said military action alone cannot guarantee lasting security. He called for stronger intelligence sharing, action against terrorism financing and arms trafficking, alongside investments in education, economic opportunities, accountable governance and protection of human rights.
The President also pointed to insecurity in the Sahel as evidence that instability in one country can threaten neighbouring states, disrupt trade and displace populations. He said Nigeria would continue working through ECOWAS, the African Union and international partnerships to address regional and global security challenges.
