Nigeria’s foreign exchange inflows rose to $63.82 billion in the first half of 2026, representing a 12.7 per cent increase from $56.62 billion recorded during the same period of 2025, according to data from the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Quarterly Statistical Bulletin.
The improvement was accompanied by a sharp reduction in forex outflows, which declined by 25.5 per cent to $19.98 billion from $26.85 billion in the first half of last year. The combination of stronger inflows and lower outflows points to an improvement in the country’s foreign exchange position during the period.
A breakdown showed that autonomous sources remained the largest contributor to forex supply, with inflows rising 18.7 per cent to $45.5 billion from $38.3 billion. Inflows through the CBN, however, dipped marginally to $18.28 billion from $18.33 billion.
Forex outflows through the Central Bank dropped significantly by 40.4 per cent to $12.2 billion from $20.47 billion, while outflows through autonomous channels increased to $7.8 billion from $6.4 billion. Autonomous sources consequently recorded a net inflow of $37.7 billion during the six-month period.
The figures underline the increasing role of private and autonomous sources in supplying foreign exchange to the Nigerian economy. The CBN has projected that the country’s external position will remain positive in 2026, supported by exports, remittances, oil and gas production and capital inflows.
