Persistent blackouts across many parts of Nigeria have triggered renewed criticism of the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, as households, businesses, schools and industries continue to grapple with erratic electricity supply. The worsening outages have added to hardship across the country, especially during the intense dry-season heat.

The minister on March 25 publicly apologised to Nigerians over the situation, admitting that the blackout had deepened hardship and affected homes, businesses, schools and industries. He said the disruption was linked to factors beyond immediate government control and promised that supply would begin to improve within two weeks.

According to reports, the present electricity crisis has been worsened by gas supply constraints affecting gas-fired plants, pipeline repairs, liquidity problems in the sector and weak domestic gas supply arrangements. Punch reported that electricity allocation to the 11 distribution companies dropped to about 2,908 megawatts as of March 25, 2026, while the minister said only two out of 32 power plants currently have firm gas supply contracts.
