Tens of thousands of people have protested across Spain over the country鈥檚 worsening housing crisis, demanding stronger protection for tenants and action to make housing more affordable. Demonstrations were held in Madrid and dozens of other cities after Spain鈥檚 parliament rejected government measures aimed at addressing housing problems.

The protests were intensified by the eviction of 87-year-old Mar铆a del Carmen Abascal from her Madrid home, where she had lived for about seven decades. Housing campaigners have also raised concerns about rising rents and a shortage of affordable homes, with Spain鈥檚 housing shortage estimated at about 550,000 units.

In Madrid, the government estimated that about 70,000 people joined Saturday鈥檚 demonstration, while organisers gave a significantly higher figure. In Valencia, police used tear gas and rubber bullets after some protesters breached a security perimeter, while demonstrations in many other cities remained peaceful.
