聽The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution has called on the National Assembly to strengthen legislation that promotes social cohesion and conflict-sensitive governance as Nigeria confronts security, economic and social pressures. Director-General Joseph Ochogwu made the call in Abuja during a media briefing ahead of the 2026 International Day of Peace. Ochogwu also urged federal and state governments to increase investment in peacebuilding, while encouraging security agencies to expand non-kinetic and community-centred approaches to conflict prevention. He identified violent extremism, farmer-herder conflicts, banditry, communal tensions, misinformation, youth restiveness and economic pressures as challenges requiring sustained preventive action. The IPCR said stronger local governments, early-warning systems, community mediation, youth engagement, peace education and support for traditional institutions should form part of Nigeria鈥檚 peace infrastructure. Activities marking the International Day of Peace on September 21 will include interfaith prayers, a peace walk, a national lecture and a football match in Abuja.聽
