Portugal coach Jorge Jesus has said the controversy surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo’s unused warm-up against Norway became a major issue because of the forward’s status as a national icon. Jesus said similar situations happen regularly to other players without attracting the same level of attention.

Ronaldo warmed up for an extended period during Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway but was not introduced. The 41-year-old later left Portugal’s training camp after Jesus indicated he would not start against Denmark, although the coach has insisted there is no lasting rift between them.

Jesus, who previously coached Ronaldo at Al-Nassr, said the situation should not damage their relationship and maintained that team decisions remain his responsibility. He has also left the door open for Ronaldo to return to the national team.
