The Kano State Private Health Institutions Management Agency has shut more than 35 private health facilities across the state over serious regulatory violations recorded during the past 12 months. Acting Director-General of the agency, Hajiya Khadijah Sa’id, disclosed this in Kano on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.

Sa’id said routine inspections uncovered violations including operating without valid licences, failure to renew annual registrations and the employment of unqualified personnel. She added that more than 100 facilities were sanctioned for various infractions, while those accused of more serious breaches were ordered to close.

According to PHIMA, some of the affected facilities were temporarily shut to allow their operators to correct identified deficiencies before seeking approval to reopen. Facilities found guilty of serious violations, however, risk permanent delisting, while professionals responsible may be prevented from using their licences to register another facility.

The agency regulates private hospitals, clinics, maternity and nursing homes, diagnostic laboratories, dental centres, beauty salons, spas, fitness centres and practitioners of traditional and alternative medicine. It also works with security agencies and other government bodies to identify illegal healthcare operations across Kano’s 44 local government areas.

Sa’id urged private healthcare operators to obtain the required licences, renew registrations promptly and ensure that only qualified personnel provide medical services. She said stronger inspection coverage and enforcement would help protect residents from unsafe healthcare practices.
