The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to intensify enforcement against the production, distribution and sale of fake, adulterated and substandard food and beverages across Nigeria. The resolution followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance during plenary on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.

The motion, sponsored by Abubakar Yalleman, who represents Madori/Kaugama Federal Constituency of Jigawa State, warned that unsafe food products could expose Nigerians to food poisoning and other serious health complications. He said some offenders allegedly counterfeit established brands, alter expiry dates, use contaminated ingredients and refill used containers for resale.

Yalleman cited recent enforcement operations, including NAFDAC’s dismantling of an alleged counterfeit alcoholic drink operation in Lagos and an NSCDC raid on an unregistered fruit juice factory in Badagry. He said the incidents highlighted the need for stronger surveillance throughout the food and beverage supply chain.

Following the motion, the House called on NAFDAC, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission to work with the police, Nigeria Customs Service, state governments and other agencies to increase inspections, product sampling, laboratory testing and enforcement against offenders.

The House also directed its committees on Health, Industry, Customs, Standards and Consumer Protection to assess the scale of the problem and review existing enforcement measures. The committees are expected to report back within four weeks for possible further legislative action.
