Iran says Iraq has agreed to expel or hand over members of Iranian Kurdish opposition groups based in the autonomous Kurdistan Region, following fresh security talks between officials of the two neighbouring countries in Baghdad.

Iranian Ambassador to Iraq Mohammad Kazem Al-Sadegh announced the development on Tuesday, October 20, saying the agreement was reached during a meeting of the joint security commission attended by an Iranian delegation, Iraqi security officials and representatives of the Kurdistan Regional Government.

Iraq’s official account of the meeting was more cautious, saying discussions focused on addressing existing security challenges and harmonising the positions of the parties involved. Baghdad has not publicly confirmed in equivalent terms that it agreed to deport the opposition members or surrender them to Tehran.

Iran and Iraq signed a security agreement in 2023 aimed at preventing Iranian Kurdish opposition groups from using Iraqi territory for armed operations against Iran. Under the arrangement, Iraqi authorities relocated some of the groups from areas near the Iranian border and placed members in camps farther inside the Kurdistan Region.

The latest Iranian announcement therefore remains subject to confirmation from Iraqi authorities. At least one Iranian Kurdish opposition group has also said it has received no notice of expulsion and rejected calls to disarm, underscoring continuing differences over how the security agreement will be implemented.
