The attack occurred on Thursday at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, after authorities received reports of a gunman on the school grounds.
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said the children killed were aged five, eight and 11. The injured victims were a seven-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher, who were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Police identified the suspected shooter as a 16-year-old resident of Bend. According to investigators, the teenager allegedly forced entry into the school by shooting at locked doors.
The suspect was later shot dead by a community member who reportedly saw the gunman enter the building and pursued him inside. Responding officers subsequently confirmed the suspect’s death.
The incident triggered an emergency response, with students evacuated and taken by bus to a separate location where they could reunite with their families. Schools across the Bend-La Pine district cancelled classes and activities scheduled for Friday.
Local officials described the attack as a devastating tragedy, while Oregon Governor Tina Kotek expressed condolences to affected families and praised the person who intervened.
Authorities said the investigation was ongoing. The suspect’s motive and any possible connection to the school had not been established in the initial reports.
