About 60 elderly former seafarers of the defunct Nigerian National Shipping Line have renewed their appeal to the Federal Government for payment of pensions and other outstanding entitlements, more than three decades after the company ceased operations.

The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria said the affected retirees underwent a verification exercise about three years ago under arrangements involving maritime authorities, but payment has yet to be completed. The union said some beneficiaries have died while others face health and financial difficulties.

The union has urged the government to conclude the process quickly, arguing that the advanced age of many of the former workers makes further delays increasingly difficult for the retirees and their families.
