Moved by the impressive form of Nigerian players abroad this season, Super Falcons striker Asisat Oshoala believes the Super Eagles would have made a strong statement at the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico if they had secured qualification for the tournament.
The Super Eagles initially missed out on the automatic qualifying ticket for the Mundial before advancing to the African play-offs, where they were eventually denied a place in the intercontinental play-offs by DR Congo.
However, the team and the Nigeria Football Federation are still nursing an outside chance of claiming the intercontinental play-off spot if FIFA rules in their favour over a protest alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players.
While Nigerians await the protracted FIFA verdict, Oshoala, reacting to the performances of several Super Eagles stars abroad on Sunday, lamented the team’s absence from the global tournament.
“Nigeria for cook for that World Cup sha o, all our boys just dey cook this season,” she wrote, suggesting that the team would have excelled at the tournament given the current form of its players.
FIFA is yet to deliver its verdict on the petition submitted by the Nigeria Football Federation, which alleges that DR Congo fielded ineligible players during last November’s 2026 World Cup African play-offs.
Meanwhile, the intercontinental play-offs are scheduled to take place from March 26 to 31 in Mexico, meaning a verdict is expected soon.
DR Congo have been drawn to face the winner of the tie between New Caledonia and Jamaica for a chance to secure one of the two available World Cup slots.
Nigeria’s protest is based on the alleged improper switch of nationality by some DR Congo players.
The 2026 World Cup will be held from June 11 to July 19 across 16 cities in the three host countries.
