Abia State Governor Alex Otti has unveiled plans to transform the state’s agricultural sector into a major source of economic growth, food security and export revenue, beginning with the revival of the Ulonna Farm Settlement in Umuahia.

The governor announced the initiative during the third Michael Okpara Memorial Lecture Series at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, where he called for modern technology and commercial investment to be integrated into farming.

Otti said he would lead a steering committee comprising representatives of the state government, the university, PAYAZA Africa Limited and other stakeholders. The committee will identify crops in which Abia has a competitive advantage and recommend the infrastructure, investment and technology required to develop commercially viable agricultural businesses.

As part of the plan, the governor has urged agro-industrial firm Presco Plc to begin its proposed investment at Ulonna Farm Settlement, which has approximately 4,200 hectares of government-owned land. The company is seeking about 10,000 hectares, and the state is working to secure additional land.

Otti acknowledged concerns over community land and called for engagement with local leaders to address disputes and build trust.

He also welcomed a proposal for an Agricultural Technology Hub at the university, saying the broader ambition is to move beyond meeting local food needs and make Abia a net exporter of agricultural produce.
