CAS sets end-November verdict for Senegal’s AFCON title appeal

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has said a final ruling on Senegal’s appeal over the disputed 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title is expected by the end of November 2026. The sports tribunal announced the timeline on Monday, October 19, following a closed-door hearing held at its headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, on October 8.

Senegal are challenging a Confederation of African Football decision that overturned their 1-0 victory over Morocco in the January 18 final in Rabat. Pape Gueye scored the winning goal in extra time after Senegal’s players had earlier walked off the pitch in protest against a late penalty awarded to the hosts before eventually returning to complete the match.

CAF’s Appeal Board ruled in March that Senegal had forfeited the final by leaving the field without the referee’s permission. The governing body consequently recorded Morocco as 3-0 winners and awarded them the continental title, prompting the Senegalese Football Federation to take the dispute to CAS.

CAS said its three-member arbitration panel is continuing deliberations and has opted to issue a complete judgment, known as a CAS Award, containing the legal grounds for its decision. The process is expected to take several weeks rather than produce the immediate ruling initially anticipated after the October hearing.
Senegal’s appeal seeks to overturn CAF’s decision and restore the country as African champions. Until CAS delivers its final ruling, Morocco remains officially recognised by CAF as the winner of the disputed tournament.
