The Department of State Services (DSS) has arraigned five suspects over the abduction of 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and a civilian in Imo State.

The suspects were brought before the Justice Oputa State High Court in Owerri on Tuesday, October 20, following their arrest during intelligence-led operations in Rivers and Abia states.

The abduction occurred on October 1 near Umunoha in Mbaitoli Local Government Area, along the Owerri–Onitsha Expressway. The prospective corps members were travelling from Ibadan, Oyo State, to their assigned NYSC orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom when they were intercepted by gunmen.

All 20 prospective corps members and the civilian were rescued on October 7 during a joint security operation at Amakohia-Ubi in Imo State. They were subsequently taken for medical attention.

The five suspects were reportedly arrested in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and Aba South, Abia State, during operations conducted between October 10 and 14. Three other suspects allegedly escaped with gunshot injuries, prompting further efforts to locate them.

The arraignment marks another stage in the investigation and prosecution of those allegedly involved in the abduction.

The suspects remain accused persons, and the allegations against them must be determined through the court process.
