The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons has uncovered a suspected baby trafficking operation in Cross River State involving women allegedly using fraudulent pregnancy claims to obtain newborns. NAPTIP said the investigation followed the interception of women travelling with a baby in Obubra.

According to the agency, a week-old baby girl allegedly stolen from her biological mother in Akwa Ibom was sold for N3m to one of the women who claimed to have a “cryptic pregnancy”. The suspected buyer and two other women were allegedly making arrangements to obtain additional babies when they were intercepted.

NAPTIP said the suspects were arrested on June 22 and that the case will be taken to court, with further proceedings expected in October. The agency said investigations are continuing to establish the full extent of the suspected operation.
