The Federal Government has called for a balance between workers’ demands for higher wages and the country’s financial capacity as the Nigeria Labour Congress’ two-week ultimatum approaches its deadline. Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume made the call on Monday, October 19, at a National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission board retreat in Abuja.

Akume, represented by Permanent Secretary in the General Services Office Dr Abubakar Kana, said decisions on salaries must protect workers’ welfare while taking government revenue, economic conditions and national development priorities into account. He urged the commission to base wage recommendations on reliable data and consultations with organised labour, employers and other stakeholders.

The government’s position comes as the NLC maintains an ultimatum issued earlier this month demanding measures to reduce petrol prices to around the level prevailing when the current ₦70,000 national minimum wage was negotiated in 2024. Labour is also seeking the commencement of fresh minimum wage talks and implementation of outstanding agreements with workers.

NLC President Joe Ajaero said the ultimatum remains in force and called on the government to address the hardship facing workers before industrial action becomes necessary. The two-week notice, which took effect on October 9, is due to expire on October 23. The Federal Government has separately argued that the statutory review of the national minimum wage is due in June 2027.

NSIWC Chairman Junaidu Bindawa said rising inflation, changing worker expectations and pressure on public finances require a more sustainable approach to wage administration. The commission said it wants Nigeria to move away from emergency salary reviews towards a permanent system based on economic data, productivity, social dialogue and government’s ability to fund agreed wages.
