Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to supporting local defence manufacturers as part of efforts to strengthen military readiness and national security.

Shaibu gave the assurance on Tuesday during a working visit to the PROFORCE Group office complex in Ogun State. According to a statement issued on Wednesday by Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, the Army chief commended the company for its innovation and contributions to Nigeria’s indigenous defence industry.

He said sustained investment in locally manufactured armoured vehicles and other military equipment could reduce dependence on foreign suppliers, improve the availability of equipment and help the Army respond more effectively to evolving security threats.

Shaibu also reiterated the Army’s support for President Bola Tinubu’s drive to expand local content and develop Nigeria’s defence industry. He described domestic manufacturing capacity as important to national security, technology transfer and the long-term development of military capabilities.

PROFORCE Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Ade Ogundeyin welcomed the visit and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to producing reliable defence products that meet the Army’s operational requirements.

The visit highlights efforts to strengthen cooperation between the military and Nigerian manufacturers. However, the impact of local production will depend on manufacturing capacity, product quality, funding, maintenance support and the Army’s operational assessment of equipment.

Greater domestic capacity could also create opportunities for technical skills development and reduce some of the logistical challenges associated with imported equipment.
