Immigration Boss Suspends Lagos, Seme Border Commanders Over Extortion Allegations

The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has ordered the immediate suspension of the commanders in charge of the Seme Border and certain Lagos formations. This decisive action, announced on Friday, April 10, 2026, follows a series of undercover reports and complaints from travelers alleging systemic extortion and harassment at these key entry and exit points.

The NIS leadership stated that the suspensions are necessary to allow for an unfettered investigation by the service’s disciplinary committee. The move is part of a broader "Clean Up" initiative aimed at restoring professionalism and integrity within the force, especially at high-traffic border locations where mismanagement directly affects Nigeria’s international reputation.

"We have zero tolerance for any form of corruption within our ranks," the NIS spokesperson noted. "The allegations against the suspended officers are grave and run contrary to the service's mandate of facilitating seamless migration and maintaining national security.
