The Federal Government has suspended the Niger State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Suberu Siyaka Aniviye, and 20 other officers following the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in the Corps’ custody in Minna. The suspensions were announced by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, pending the outcome of an independent investigation.

The government has also constituted a 10-member committee to establish the identities of the deceased and investigate their arrest, detention, the conditions in which they were held and the circumstances surrounding their deaths. The panel will also determine whether negligence, misconduct or other responsibility was involved and recommend appropriate action where necessary.

The deaths occurred on September 17 after the suspects were arrested during operations against illegal mining in Niger State. The cause of death has not been conclusively established, with medical and forensic investigations still ongoing.
