Real Madrid forward Vinícius Jr has called on referees to provide greater protection for attacking players who regularly take on defenders, naming Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal and Atlético Madrid’s Julián Álvarez alongside himself. The Brazilian made the comments after receiving a four-match suspension following his red card against Villarreal.
Vinícius was sent off during Real Madrid’s 1-0 La Liga victory at the Santiago Bernabéu after a VAR review showed him pulling Villarreal midfielder Nathan Saliba’s hair. The Spanish Football Federation’s disciplinary committee subsequently imposed a two-match suspension for violent conduct and another two matches for his protests after the dismissal.
Speaking after the punishment was announced, Vinícius questioned what he considers inconsistent treatment from match officials. He said players whose style involves dribbling and taking risks frequently receive heavy challenges and argued that referees should do more to protect footballers capable of changing matches through individual skill.
The Brazil international also criticised the timing of the disciplinary decision and said the rule used in his case had not been clearly explained to players. While acknowledging that rival supporters are entitled to boo him, he maintained that repeated fouls against attacking players should receive greater attention from officials.
The suspension means Vinícius will miss Real Madrid’s upcoming league matches against Sevilla, Barcelona, Racing Santander and Valencia, including the October 25 El Clásico. He had earlier apologised to his teammates and supporters for leaving Real Madrid with 10 players during the Villarreal match.
