Former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte has denied reports that he is in advanced negotiations to take charge of Manchester United amid growing uncertainty over Michael Carrick’s future at Old Trafford. Conte addressed the speculation on Friday, October 23, 2026, through a statement on Instagram.

Reports in Italy had claimed discussions intensified following United’s 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como, with suggestions that Conte wanted full control over transfer decisions and the freedom to appoint his own backroom staff. The 57-year-old, however, said no negotiations with any club had reached an advanced stage and described reports of financial or operational demands as unfounded.

Conte said discussions over contractual terms would only take place if a concrete opportunity emerged, adding that any agreement would have to reflect the needs of both the club and the manager. He is currently without a club after leaving Napoli at the end of last season.

Pressure has increased on Carrick after United went seven matches without a win, including the heavy defeat in Como. Reports have linked Conte, former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe and Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann with the job, but no formal appointment process or agreement with Conte has been confirmed.

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler has also distanced himself from speculation linking him with United, insisting that his attention remains on his current club. Manchester United have yet to announce any change to Carrick’s position.
