Families of 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps members from Oyo State say kidnappers have demanded a combined N1bn ransom for their release after they were abducted while travelling to orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states. The victims were seized from two buses along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in Umunoha, Imo State, on Thursday.

The families said the abductors contacted them using the victims’ phones and demanded N50m for each person, giving them 24 hours to raise the money. The parents appealed to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, and security authorities to intervene and secure their children’s release.

The Imo State Police Command has continued a search-and-rescue operation, with authorities earlier reporting that some victims had been rescued. Police later said they had located a suspected camp where the remaining victims were being held but delayed a ground operation over fears that the area could have been rigged with improvised explosive devices.
